Bill with Nike,
Ch Silvershadow's Just Do It

I began showing dogs in 1974. My mother had Afghan hounds and I showed for her. Salukis were actually my frist breed. I was more attracted to them by their power, sleekness and, yes, short coat. I acquired my frist Saluki from Karen Wilson, Ch Samchar Fadora of Sylentwood, a beautiful black and silver bitch. I acquired the second Saluki from Gil Katz, Ch Sultaan's Wizard. Bred together they produced by Ch Silvershadow's Shady Lady. Upon Looking for a match for her, I wanted to use a dog from Jo Robertson, Ch Raven Hill Camden, but he was too old. My dream was gone but it led me to Ch Raven Hill's Pandemonium. Panda was a silver grizzle by Ch Raven Hill Jonathan Sundown out of Ch Raven Hill Cassandra. Along with my partner, Anna Tiedemann, I acquired Panda. He was sound, smooth, and with impeccable side gait. I specialed Panda, who became a multiple group winner, Top Ten and, beyond all dreams, was BOS at the SCOA National under Don Wieden.

Eventually, Panda came home with me and I had a litter with him and Lady. Panda was also bred to Lynn Coman's Ch Amber of Ophir. My stud fee puppy back; he grew to be Ch Silvershadow Sakr of Ophir. Socks finished as a puppy and went on to become the #2 Saluki in the breed in 1995. He was a beautiful, big, red dog with sound movement and was smoothly built. He was extremely intelligent, which also made him sometimes a handful to show. After Sakr was finished, Anna and I dissolved our partnership on the dogs. She went on to work for Moss Bow and I, soon after, met and married Sue Rooney. Now Elessar, Odi et Amo, and Silvershadow have combined to include what I guess one would call, in modern terms, a new, extended dog family. (See my wife's article for the results of our extended family.)

I am proud to say that my foundation helped to produce, with Francis and Sue, all the group winners, specialty winners, and champions we have produced this decade. I am especially proud of my new bitch, Nike. She finished at 10 months and won the SCOA National sweepstakes under Monica Stoner and the Eastern Regional Sweepstakes under Frank Cassano. It is always rewarding to win under breeders.

I also agree that the hardest thing to maintain in today's world is a moderate Saluki. The future of the breed is up to us with healthy, happy Salukis to save the day.
